American singer-songwriter R. Kelly last Friday (29.02.2010) failed to live up to the expectations and hype in Uganda.

The musician, who was reportedly paid $750,000 as performance fees, staged a one-hour show at Lugogo Cricket Oval that left many fans yearning for more.

But the musician was in line with his contract that read that he would only give a 60-minute performance. Concert tickets were Ksh10,000 for the platinum wing and Ksh6,000 for the gold wing. Regular tickets were sold for Ksh1,200.

In addition, the concert attracted more than 45,000 people but only 38,000 managed to get in. Those who were lucky to get in were treated to an energetic one-hour performance by R. Kelly. He performed most of his popular classics like Bump n Grind, Down Low, Honey Love, Fiesta, Hotel, Ignition, Slow Wind, Snake, Make Rain, Happy People, Step in the Name of Love, That’s That, I believe I can Fly, Thoia Thoing among others.

The audience went crazy when he fused his stage performance with sex-driven language. He left out some of the hits like Storm is Over, World’s Greatest and Burn It Up, leaving his fans unsatisfied.

R. Kelly flew in his own back-up. They blended well with him on stage.

The lighting was up to standard, so was the stage and the sound.

The concert however turned chaotic when Police fired in the air to disperse a crowd of ticket holders that were still queuing outside when R. Kelly went on stage and tried to force their way in. Some, allegedly caught with counterfeit show tickets, were arrested and were in custody at Jinja Road Police Station
