PM’s new $329MIL offices now ready for use

PM OFFICE

Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s new offices will be ready for occupation on Thursday. The refurbishment of the former Shell and BP House on Nairobi’s Harambee Avenue, across the road from the President’s Office, was carried out by the Public Works ministry and Buildmore Construction. Since he became Prime Minister in 2008, Mr Odinga has been working from Treasury Building. On Friday, Public Works minister Chris Obure made a final inspection of the new offices that cost the taxpayer Sh329 million.

Kenyans and dual citizenship in the USA

DUAL

As Kenyans overwhelmingly voted for a new constitution, two key items were under focus by Kenyans across the Diaspora namely dual citizenship and voting rights for those residing abroad. But for Kenyans in the US, a debate is raging as to whether holding US citizenship as well as Kenyan citizenship would violate US law.

Kirima Family saga takes a twist

Somewhere in Nairobi’s up-market Kitisuru neighbourhood, a frail and sickly old man — once a powerful city politician and well-heeled businessman — rarely ventures outside the imposing metal gate. On Friday, his daughters Wanja and Wangari alleged that, for more than two years, the once robust Gerishon Kirima has been kept away from the rest of his family and friends, and that medical care that he urgently needs had been withheld. And two days later, their father was driven away in a government ambulance for medical attention.

Own a two-bedroom house for Sh150,000

HAO

A three-bedroom house may sound modest by some people’s standards, but it is the ultimate dream home to many Kenyans.
With innovation, most hurdles can now be overcome, enabling people earning less than Sh25,000 a month to own this type of house. One home ownership model, piloted by microfinance organisation Bora — now a bank — seems to be taking shape, giving hope to low income earners.

Kenyan woman in Georgia found dead in a bathtub

jo A Kenyan woman who lived with her auntie in Sandy Springs, Georgia, USA was found dead in a bathtub on Thursday evening.
A Sandy Springs Police spokesman confirmed to The Standard that Joanne Muthoni, 20, died of profuse bleeding following a gunshot that shuttered her skull.
But the local Police Department was tight lipped on the circumstances surrounding the death. Detective Bryan Kim, who is investigating the matter, promised to issue a comprehensive statement later.
But Speaking to The Standard, the aunt to the deceased, Jane Wangui Fisher, said that on Thursday evening, she and her husband found the niece lying dead in a pool of blood in the bathroom.

"We had travelled leaving Joanne behind in our house. But we were shocked to find her body in the bathroom", said a visibly shaken Wangui.
Asked whether she saw the murder weapon, Wangui said she was so scared upon seeing her dead niece that she did not pay attention to details.
"I was screaming as I called the police." She however confirmed that the police had found the gun suspected to have killed Muthoni.
The deceased was a graduate of Gwinnett High School and, according to her auntie, was planning to attend Atlanta Art Institute.
Reports of Kenyans in the Diaspora dying under mysterious circumstances have been on the rise in the recent past. This year alone, tens of young Kenyans living in the US have committed suicide.
